THE WEEKLY KNIGHT
-------------------
(for August 1, 1992)
Held last month in Brussels, the final chess event sponsored
by the S.W.I.F.T. Corporation turned out to be more of a
"bash" than a tournament. It was evident from the start that
the faint-hearted would not do well here, given the quick
time control (25 minutes per person for the entire game), the
knockout style format (2 game matches and blitz sudden death)
and hefty cash prizes equal to $50,000 and $25,000 to the top
two. Add 32 of the world's highest rated players to the fire
and one has the makings of a real conflagration.
With so many great players present and such a blood-thirsty
format, upsets (if they can be termed as such) proved to be
the order of the day. Even the first round began with a
bang, as number one ranked Anatoly Karpov lost to Yasser
Seirawan; Mikhail Gurevich was eliminated by Boris Gulko and
Dutch Champion Jeroen Piket "outclocked" the slower Valery
Salov in the blitz tiebreakers. In a gruelling battle, New
York Open winner Eric Lobron eliminated the second board from
the Russian Olympic team, Alexander Khalifman. The remaining
American players, Larry Christiansen and Gata Kamsky, split
their matches (Christiansen lost to Beliavsky and Kamsky
knocked out Azmaiparashvili).
Subsequent rounds proved no kinder to players who would
normally be considered favorites: Seirawan was eliminated by
Georgiev; Lobron reached the finals with victories over Artur
Yusupov, Jan Timman and Pedrag Nikolic; Ivan Sokolov ousted
Kamsky, and Speelman proved to be quicker than Evgeny Bareev.
But probably the biggest surprise of all was the winner of
the tournament--Michael Adams--who defeated three fellow
Englishmen in a row (Nunn, Short and Speelman), followed by
perhaps the fastest player in the world, Viswanathan Anand
and then Lobron in the finals.
In this week's game, Adams circles the wagons and hangs on
for a difficult win against Lobron.
